MBP2017 UBS-C female > Cable Chick/eBay-noname "silver" USB-C male to MiniDisplayPort female > Dual-link DVI > DVI out > Apple Cinema 30 DVI cable MBP2017 USB-C female > Apple USB-C male to USB-A female > Dual-link DVI (optional: > USB-A out to Apple HD Cinema 30 or a powered Anker USB hub as in my case) (This works well with my physical setup.)

At the moment, I am actually plugging a self-powered Anker USB hub into the USB "out" of the Dual-link DVI, so I have powered and Mac OS connected ports just not on the monitor but next to it.

Again, this is an ad-hoc personal theory, I have not systematically tested and my technological understand of what happens in that active Dual-link DVI is Nil. My theory is that the Dual-link DVI really needs all the power it can get: I felt performance improved slightly if I either used an Apple iPad 10W wall charger (instead of USB-C to USB-A) to power the Dual-link DVI (but then USB devices plugged into monitor are not seen by Mac OS of course) and/or not connecting USB to the Apple HD Cinema 30 at all (i.e., having the USB ports on the monitor without power).

The MacBook Pro, when closed, goes to sleep instead of displaying on the external display, have to live with that. The solution USB-C male to DisplayPort and then via adapter to MiniDisplayPort (as in the original thread that I linked above Scottcycle) did not work for me, tried one set of adapters. You will have to sometimes disconnect and reconnect the cables and/or switch off the Apple HD Cinema 30 (only on startup, once "on" it tends to stay on). I would appreciate if someone could point me to a solution – Thank you!Īll of the three "silver" USB-C male to MiniDisplayPort female adapters (there are circulating around as nonames or mini-brands on eBay) are working BUT not reliably on startup. My suspicion is the Satechi multi-hub, also it was actually pricey so I am surprised. (I also tried plugging the USB cable into the Satechi Multi-Hub and plugging it into other power sources.) The power light of the Apple Cinema HD Display comes on and it is recognized by Mac OS, but the screen remains black (or shows some vague lines flickering). This is what I tried and it does not work for me: I am connecting the USB cable of the Dual-Link DVI Adapter via a Klik (Officeworks) USB-C Male to USB-A Female adapter ( ) and the Mini DisplayPort cable of the Dual-Link DVI Adapter via the Mini DisplayPort port of a Satechi Aluminum (USB) Type-C to Multimedia Adapter (a 7-port multi-hub) ( ) to the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Prof 2017 now comes without Mini DisplayPort and all USB-C.

How can I connect an Apple Cinema HD Display 30-Inch to an MacBook Pro 15-Inch 2017 (USB-C)? Could someone recommend some adapter/cables/other solution currently available (from Australia, this excludes Amazon US)?Īs many others, I already have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter ( Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter - Apple (AU)), firmware 1.03. There was an old thread ( Re: Can I connect the new MacBook Pro 2016 (USB C) to a Cinema Display 30?) but that is closed now (and the posted solution requires purchases not available anymore).
